§ 12-1. Definitions.

  • As used in this chapter, the following words and phrases shall have the meanings respectively ascribed to them in this section:

    Apprentice electrician: A person who undertakes electrical work under the direct, constant and personal supervision and control of either a licensed master electrician or a journeyman electrician.

    Distribution system: The distribution system of any electrical telephone, telegraph, signal and/or public service company shall not extend to any electrical apparatus or equipment which said company does not own or control.

    Electrical maintenance work: The keeping in safe repair of electrical installations, apparatus and equipment and the keeping in safe repair or maintaining or replacing of equivalent electrical equipment within a building or in or on the premises where a maintenance electrician is regularly employed. The term does not include the installation of new and additional electrical work, electrical equipment or electrical apparatus.

    Electrical sign work: Electrical work which is limited to electric and illuminated display signs and neon cove lighting. This work includes connecting signs to existing sign circuits either inside or outside of buildings, and also running new circuits or service to all forms of electric signs, provided such circuits or service is for the sole purpose of powering or illuminating such signs. Electrical sign work includes the installation of meter loop and main panel if the entire service is to be used for the purpose of illuminating or powering signs. Electrical sign work does not include the replacement of any main panel when said panel is used for purposes other than the illumination or powering of signs or the running of branch circuits or services other than that necessary for the illumination or powering of signs.

    Electrical work: The installation, maintenance, alteration, repair or erection of any electrical wiring, apparatus, devices, appliances, fixtures or equipment for which a permit is required by the provisions of this chapter.

    Journeyman electrician: A person who undertakes electrical work under the supervision, direction and control of a master electrician, master sign electrician or maintenance electrician. The term shall not include the term "apprentice electrician."

    Maintenance electrician: An electrician regularly employed on a permanent basis by any person who performs work in the confines of the building or on the premises where he is regularly employed on a permanent basis. The term shall include those persons who are employed on a maintenance contract basis to perform maintenance work on specific equipment within the building or buildings or on the premises covered by the maintenance contract.

    Master electrician: A natural person who performs electrical work and who has the qualifications and experience to do such work without being under the supervision of another and who in fact does electrical work without being under the supervision of another.

    Master sign electrician: A master electrician who performs only electrical sign work.

    Sign electrician: A person who undertakes electrical sign work under the direction and supervision of a master sign electrician.
